Generally, airlines won’t transfer your luggage between flights on separate tickets. This means you’ll need to collect your bags after your first flight, clear customs, and re-check them for your second flight.
There are a few exceptions:
1-If both flights are on Turkish Airlines and your layover is longer than 20 hours, you may be able to request a luggage transfer at the check-in counter for your first flight.
2-If you have travel insurance that covers baggage transfer for missed connections, it might apply even if your flights are on separate tickets.
Transit:
If you don’t need to collect your luggage, you can follow the signs for transit passengers. This will take you through security and to the gate for your next flight without having to go through customs or immigration.
If you do need to collect your luggage, you’ll need to go through customs and immigration after your first flight. Then, follow the signs for arrivals and baggage claim. Once you have your luggage, you can check in for your second flight at the airline’s transfer desk.
Time:
Make sure you have enough time for your layover, especially if you need to collect your luggage and go through customs. Add at least 2 hours for this process, plus any additional time you’ll need for security and boarding.
Here are some additional tips for having a smooth layover at Istanbul Airport ;
Download the Istanbul Airport app. This app has a flight tracker, a map of the airport, and information about shops, restaurants, and amenities.
Book your second flight with some extra time between the arrival of your first flight and the departure of your second flight. This will give you some buffer time in case your first flight is delayed.
Consider using a luggage storage service. This can be a good option if you don’t want to lug your bags around with you during your layover.
Relax and enjoy your layover! Istanbul Airport has a lot to offer, from duty-free shopping to luxury spas.
